The CJ Effect

I spent all day yesterday wearing a suit.. not just any suit but my very beautiful handmade Italian suit. I wore it to the City of London prayer breakfast- and then kind of dashed through my day with it.. namely- to train Luton interns on identity, to book a resaturant, to see my spiritual director, to see my parents, to the beautician, to ta gig in HMV, to the theatre, to the pub.. to home..

The thing I noticed was that it had quite a strange effect on how I dealt with my day.. I felt like I was morphing into a proper grown up (I hope of the CJ variety.. lets face it we would all want her job! For the uninitiated see picture)

I found myself: running through the rain with a newspaper on my head, taking a copy of the Telegraph (not very CJ like I know), walking purposefully, talking very fast into my mobile, seducing bearded journalists, feeling more in control, letting people get out of my way as I walked, making decisions more quickly, making people cry with my incisive comments, getting everywhere on time.. all very odd!

West Wing here I come

(by the way one of the things above is not true... can you spot it?)

I'd like to think that you didn't stoop to such depths as to buy the Torygraph, however I think the bit about the journalists being bearded is even more outlandish!

Nah, I can picture the bearded journalist thing, and Jude seducing them! Getting everywhere on time is more unlikely, because vehicles of public transport don't have eyes and therefore can't see if someone is wearing a suit and therefore will always be as late as they like.

Journalists? I'm not sure. Bearded? I don't doubt it.

Hee hee, sent that post to a couple of West Wing fans here in HK and they loved it. Got to watch a little of it over the weekend.

Can only recall you in a suit once (I think!!) - and I've no idea where that was!!!

Looking good... ;o)

A Week Today

A week today, when all the furore has ebbed and the markets have bottomed out, our nation will awake to the sounds of bugles and church bells as we commemorate 100 years from the start of the Battle of The Somme.  I am an historian by background, and the Somme for me is emblematic of a human tragedy that need never have happened. My reading of it is this: we began a war from a variety of odd alliances and murky motivations, capped off finally by a sense that no-one had the will to stop it.  In order to give the war effort impetus, posters, propaganda began to be bandied around about the enemy, about what they would do to children and how they needed to be stopped. It worked as a recruiting effort- young men, boys, and women all joined the war effort. They joined as an act of patriotism, tinged yes with fear, but also a sense that it might be the right thing to do. They joined from across the country- but at the heart of the front line forces were thousands and ten of thousands...

Remembering What I Enjoy..

Occasionally I forget things. Some stuff like birthdays, names and stuff is a normal human thing, and I don't sweat it so much. But I also forget some other stuff which is not so good. I forget what I enjoy. I don't know how it happens but it does from time to time. And its at these moments that I need a bit of help remembering. So- this is a request for help. What do I enjoy doing? What gives me joy? Leave me a comment.
